The planer kit is a simple effective method of trolling a bait or lure below the surface.
The depth below the surface that the planer kit runs depends on the speed of the boat, the diameter of the lanyard and the size of the bait being trolled.
To use a planer kit follow the steps described below:

1. Attach the end of the planer's lanyard to a cleat or pad eye on the stern of your boat.
2. Set out the planer. Once set it will run at approximately a 45 degree down angle.
3. Set out the bait or lure to be trolled.
4. When you have let out the amount of line that you wish to fish behind the planer, attach a #64 rubber band to the line.
5. Attach the end of a double swivel to the tag end of the rubber band.
6. Atach the other end of the double swivel to the lanyard of the planer.
7. Reduce the reel drag. As the bait pays out, the double swivel connecting the fishing line to the planer lanyard will cause the bait to travel down the lanyard.
8. When the double swivel reaches the planer, set the drag to the desired strike setting.
9. When a fish take the bait, the rubber band will break and the fishing line will be free of the planer lanyard.
10. To retieve the planer, grasp the lanyard and pull it quickly toward the boat. When you have retrieved 8 or 10 feet of lanyard quickly release it. This should cause the planer to trip.
11. Once tripped, you can quickly retrieve the planer.
